Step 2 - Co-op and Internship Work Term Pre-requisites

To prepare for workplace learning, you must first complete the mandatory prerequisite course that prepares you for the workplace.

Prepare for the work term (pre-requisite courses)

Career Development-Workplace Preparation Skills (CDEV-WPS) is a mandatory course for all students prior to securing a co-op or internship and for all technology students as a graduation requirement.

For the Hospitality Management Diploma, students are required to take Hospitality Career Skills (HMGT 100); and Hospitality and Tourism Career Development (TMGT 100) is required for the Applied Tourism & Hospitality Management Post-Degree Diploma. Both HMGT 100 and TMGT 100 are offered through the School of Business and are a mandatory component of these programs.

Plan carefully to ensure completion of CDEV-WPS at least one semester before commencing your first work term.

ߴý  the CDEV-WPS course

Equip yourself with the knowledge and skills to apply for and obtain positions in a variety of work environments. In this course, you will explore how your discipline-specific knowledge, personal strengths, interests, and values fit with potential work-integrated learning opportunities and/or career pathways. You will learn core job search strategies, including cover letter and resume writing. You will also develop your interview, networking, and workplace skills, and will learn how to reflect on and articulate your knowledge, skills, and experience.

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Reflect on and assess your knowledge, skills, attributes, interests, and values in order to identify potential work experience or career paths connected to your studies

  2. Develop effective job search skills using a range of tools and strategies

  3. Articulate knowledge, skills, attributes, interests, values, and experience in relation to specific work opportunities

  4. Discuss the significance of professional skills and behaviours in the workplace

  5. Develop effective communication skills and strategies, including active listening, empathy, and curiosity

Workplace education preparation is standard at most colleges and universities offering co-operative education in Canada. All normal ߴý tuitionԻregistration procedures apply.

You can register for the work term pre-requisite course, CDEV-WPS, on  or through Registration.
