Creating the infrastructure we live in
If you look around any urban area, most of what you see is the result of civil engineering. Learn how to plan, design, and maintain structures and public works, while respecting and responding to the natural environment.
Is Civil Engineering Technology right for you?
While trial and error may work when building your own marble run, it won鈥檛 work if you鈥檙e designing a bridge. The calculation of all the forces and stresses needs to occur before anything is built and these calculations require some pretty complex math. Furthermore, a much-overlooked talent necessary in engineering is communication. Drawings, reports, site meetings, instructions to contractors, even emails and phone conversations all require communication skills. The best engineers and technologists have skills in both areas.
As a Civil Engineering Technologist, you'll have the opportunity to work on:
- bridges, buildings, towers, silos and tunnels
- highways, roads, railroads, airports and canals
- protection of the environment and public health by treating water and sewage, and by protecting our streams and waterways from urban runoff
- structures and subdivisions
- infrastructure such as water supply, water mains, sewer mains and flood control

In demand
Obtaining a Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology is one of the quickest paths to a rewarding and well-paying career. From the most remote village to the biggest cities,听there is always a need for civil engineering听鈥 whether it be installing sewers, ensuring clean water, or supervising the construction of a major skyscraper.
Civil engineering technologists assist engineers in听protecting human lives at the most basic level: water that doesn't carry disease, seismic upgrading, ensuring homes don't flood, and building roads that are safe to drive on.
The program is accredited by Technology Accreditation Canada and therefore the graduates are both nationally and internationally recognized.

Hands-on learning
Do you like looking at graphs? Do you enjoy disassembling things to see how they work or designing and building your own toys or gadgets? Our hands-on program will give you real world technical problem-solving abilities. Your听abilities in design and computer software听will be a desirable asset to you as you advance in the workforce.
You'll have the opportunity to gain valuable work experience and industry connections through our听Co-operative Education and Internship听programs.
Bridging the gap to UBC and UVic
After graduating with a Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology, you can apply to 含害羞传媒's听Civil Engineering Bridge听program.
The eight-month bridge program leads directly into the third year of a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Civil Engineering at the听听or the听听and the University of Victoria.

Start in September or January
The program is delivered over four semesters. You can start Year 1 in either September or January. Those starting in September will complete Year 1 by the end of April and can find employment for the summer. Those starting in January will complete Year 1 at the end of August and immediately start Year 2 in September, completing the program in 16 months. It is also possible to start in September and spread the Year 1 courses over three semesters. Year 2 for everyone starts in September and completes at the end of April.
Paid co-op work terms are an option with this program.
Year 1
In your first year, you'll learn the theoretical background necessary for civil engineering calculations. You will also learn skills such as AutoCAD drafting and surveying.
Year 2
In second year, you will apply your background skills to civil engineering applications such as structural and municipal design, asset management, and properties of soils and materials. You will complete your program with a major design project of your own choosing.
Note:
Part-time is available with consultation with the Chair.
